Why We Like It:
First opening its doors in May 2019, Royalton Antigua is an all-inclusive resort that is home to Antigua’s only overwater bungalows.
The resort offers opulence and luxury and has a choice setting on the clear, calm waters of Antigua’s Deep Bay, less than twenty minutes from St. John’s, and a half an hour from V. C. Bird International Airport.
Having been acquired in late 2021 by the Marriott Hotel group, you can expect it, little by little, to become one of Antigua’s most sought-after resorts.
Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation:
The accommodation choices are many, with of course the over-water villas taking pride of place. They cover a full 1442 square feet and have king-size bedrooms, lounges (with sofa bed), dining areas, and gorgeous outdoor terraces overlooking the Caribbean.
They are also sleek, sophisticated, and luxurious. Expect private infinity plunge pools, jacuzzis, glass floor viewing panels, private butlers, and 24-hour room service as well as in-room aromatherapy, satellite TV, top-of-the-range music systems, complimentary IPTV movie selections, twice daily re-stocked minibars and a pillow menu for example.
The other accommodation choices are a mixture of suites in different locations around the private beach and all of them share the same sleek interiors and modern luxury features.
They can all sleep up to four but are generally smaller than the overwater bungalows which have over 1,100 square feet (106 square meters) of space.
Note: Children (under 13) are not allowed to stay in the overwater bungalows. In all the other accommodation though children are welcome.
Prices & Availability:
Check out the details at Booking.com here, Expedia here, or on the resort’s own website (Marriott) here.
Note: Like all luxury overwater bungalows in the Caribbean those at Royalton Antigua are extremely sought after – you should really reserve your stay as soon as possible. You are allowed free cancellation on most bookings.
Food & Drink:
The resort has seven restaurants in total, with complimentary in-room private dinner and drinks service also available.
The choice of food is enormous with a mixture of Caribbean, American, and European to be enjoyed, both buffet and a la carte.
Each eatery has a different atmosphere and you can chill out with beef burgers and beer one evening then indulge in gourmet taster menus and fine wines the next.
There are cafes and various themed bars around the resort too, some with live entertainment, and you’ll find a great range of cocktails as well as other premium drinks including French fine wines from their on-site wine cellar.
Service though can be a bit hit-and-miss at some of the restaurants. Though both the service and the food have won plaudits from some guests, for negative reviewers of The Royalton a lack of good service at the restaurants was the most common gripe.
It is a relatively new resort and a shortage of experienced staff was blamed. Since May 2021 though the Royalton has been in the hands of Marriott and standards are reported to have been improved.
Resort Facilities & Things to Do:
There is a plush, modern spa at The Royalton with hydrotherapy circuits, a fitness center/gym, and outdoor tennis courts with instructors available, and guests can also join other complimentary classes in fitness, yoga, and more.
There is a Kid’s Club for children of 4 to 12 with an outdoor playground and indoor playroom, and a Teen’s Club for those 13 to 17 with PlayStation lounges, billiards, ping pong tables, and more.
You have a private beach at the Royalton, a range of complimentary water sports are available and there is a golf cart service to whisk guests here and there around the resort.
Location:
The Royalton sits at the edge of Deep Bay, which has Antigua’s most lovely and calm waters. It is also very near (just twenty minutes) the island’s capital St. John’s.
There you can check out the historic English Harbour, enjoy some shopping and dining as well as some authentic Caribbean nightlife in the company of friendly locals. Various tours and excursions can also be organized around this charming island via the resort concierge.
Some Guest Reviews:
“The beach is so beautiful and I love how excluded it is from other resorts. We did diamond club and think it was worth it for the hydrotherapy access. You also have more access to restaurants and the beach. The food was really good. I’m not a huge fan of some resorts because a lot of them have no flavor or only have food options that only cater to Americans (no flavor). Since it wasn’t too busy they upgraded us to a swim up pool which was amazing. Lastly, the staff was so warm and hospitable. I definitely would come again….”
“Our vacation was fabulous and unforgettable. It was beautiful, and the staff was professional and kind. I always felt safe and attended to. I highly recommend the Royalton Antigua to everyone interested in the inclusive hotels. Way to go Antigua, you’ve really stepped it up!…”
