Why We Like it:
The adults only St. George’s Caye is a scenic private island off the coast of Belize City near to the Caribbean’s largest, and the world’s second largest, barrier reef.
It offers adventure and excitement on the one hand (it is a popular vacation spot for divers for eg.) and peace and tranquility on the other (honeymooners come here too).
The food is generally highly praised, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included in the room rate, the service is great and the atmosphere relaxed, warm and friendly.
It sells itself a luxury resort but if you are indeed expecting luxury the accommodation, though charming and very comfortable, may be underwhelming. Overall though the resort, the island and general atmosphere of the place make it a very enjoyable place to spend time in.
Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation:
You have a choice of broadly similar thatched roof cabanas, all doubles/twins in three different locations – Overwater, Beachfront & Garden, with the Oceanfront being the most expensive, the Garden cheapest and the Overwater in the middle price range.
In the vast majority of resorts the over water accommodation is the most expensive choice but not at St. George’s – this is, we imagine, because they are quite closely huddled together, in a half circle facing the sea, and therefore offer less privacy than other cabanas.
Some people may like this almost sociable setting but if it’s a relaxing romantic sojourn you’re after then you’d be far better off in a Garden or Oceanfront Bungalows, with the latter being our favorite.
All the cabanas are pretty much the same size (roughly 380 sq ft.) and design, and are rustic, romantic and cosy with thatched roofs and lots of native wood furniture and fittings.
There is air-con and a mini fridge but not much more in terms of modern facilities. Wifi for example is only available in the main building. Outside they all have nice verandahs with hammock and seating.
The overwaters are just off shore and don’t have private access to the water, you can go for a dip though by just stepping out the front door.

Resort Facilities & Things to Do:
The island has two beaches, the one on the eastern side being the largest, main beach where most people spend more time in. The resort also has a salt water swimming pool. You can snorkel just off shore – snorkel gear as well as paddle-boards hobie cats etc. are all free to use, and you are entitled to one free scuba diving session.
You can organize various excursions and boat trips etc. from the resort, to the Belize Reef of course but also tours of other islands and cultural tours on the mainland for example.
They have a small spa center which does various treatments including Swedish, deep tissue and hot stone massages. You can enjoy one there, in your room or out on the beach if you so prefer.
The food as mentioned is great here and all room rates come with breakfast, lunch and dinner included. They are social affairs with a communal atmosphere and where you’ll find it easy to get to know your fellow guests.
Sometimes dinner can be a barbecue party on the beach and people might linger with cold drinks at the bar in the evenings, though St. George’s overall isn’t a party place.
Resort Location:
St George’s Caye is 7 miles off the coast of Belize City, the nation’s capital – a 20 minute boat ride. When flying in to Belize International Airport a resort representative will be there to greet and escort you to the marina for your shuttle boat transfer, all free of charge. If already in Belize and making your own way just let the resort know and their representative can meet you anywhere in Belize City.
Resort Reviews:
“Start to finish this resort was top notch service and care! In a time of Covid, they were clean, careful, and conscientious. Like many other reviews, you will see that every person you encounter you will know by name and will have a passion for the service they provide. The sheer logistics of how they manage everyone on the island and their activities is just amazing and it makes for a perfect relaxing tropical experience. Let me take you through a typical day. You wake up to your coffee and tea (with all the fixing on how you like it) outside your cabana at 6am or whenever you want to wake up. Go to breakfast and they have a menu of delicious food served EXACTLY how you specify and need. I can’t emphasize the care that goes into making each guests menu preferences right! SPOT ON! They come around and take your temperature and ask what you have planned or tell you about your day based on what you already scheduled for activities. What you should do, who you should see, what you should wear, etc. Everything is handled, you want to go fishing, just ask, you want to go scuba, just ask, you want a massage, just say, you want to try your hand at sailing, just let someone know. Tours of Mayan ruins, zip lining, cave tubing, you can do it all! And they handle everything just show up! Relax on the beach and on a whim decide to go kayak and see the manatee., or take your coffee watching the sunrise on new years day! Best vacation spot, will be back!….”
“From the moment we arrived we were treated with kindness and a genuine sense that the staff primary focus was ensuring we had a great time at their resort. Jahnene, Oliver, Melvin, Wilbur and the names go on, make you feel like part of the resort family. The resort is large enough to have great meals and mix with other people if you want to, small enough to feel intimate. Your days belong to you, you can do as much or as little as you want. Some activities come as part of your package such as fishing, kayaking, sailing and some off island activities come with an additional fees that still represent great value. We lounged on the beach, sailed, caught barracudas and red snappers, saw dolphins in the sea, swam with manatees while snorkeling and got to ride a jungle river to the areas magnificent Mayan temples. All in four days. The food was incredible. We feel relaxed, we spent four days in paradise. Quite literally our best vacation ever…..”
