Banyan Tree Mayakoba in Playa del Carmen is a premier luxury resort and one of only four in Mexico with overwater bungalows It’s very close to Palafitos El Dorado and Rosewood Mayakoba, both with their own overwaters; in fact, they share the same stretch of coast. Banyan Tree’s overwater bungalows sure stand out; they opt for a modern, two-story, almost European chalet-inspired design rather than the traditional rustic Polynesian style with thatched roofs. They are also quite enclosed, so very private, and many will appreciate that, though we personally prefer the more traditional, open-air feel of Palafitos, or the extra sleek modernity of Rosewood Mayakoba’s, up the road.
