A classic feature of overwater bungalows is the private pool, most usually an infinity pool, on the terrace overlooking the ocean.
Some may consider this an unnecessary feature - a pointless extravagance - seeing as you probably have some of the world's most inviting waters just feet below you already.
The pool isn't trying to compete with the ocean though. The first thing a private pool has, which the ocean doesn't, is a raised view of the ocean. A lovely aesthetic that looks particularly good in photos.
The second is that no matter how private the section of the sea surrounding your bungalow may be it can never be fully secluded. The private pool though is tucked away on the terrace, thereby hidden from the view of your fellow guests.

Overwater Bungalows in Mexico - An Overview
Mexico has long been a hugely popular tourist destination with many top class resorts especially around Cancun and the Mayan Riviera.
It only has three resorts with overwater bungalows/water villas though - Palafitos El Dorado, Rosewood Mayakoba and (brand new in 2021) Banyan Tree Mayakoba. This is certainly not from lack of demand, just the lack of suitable - very calm shallow, sheltered bay or lagoon like - venues.
So not a lot to choose from and strangely enough all three overwater bungalow resorts are just a couple of miles away from each other in the upmarket resort town of Playa del Carmen, equidistance between Tulum and Cancun.
All are also really fabulous 5 Star resorts though and thus very suited to play host to Mexico's only overwater bungalows.
It's obviously difficult for us to judge which resort is the best overall as all have extremely high standards. The overwater bungalows equally so - it will come down to your own personal sense of aesthetic.
We though did prefer the Palafitos overwater bungalows only because they strayed less from the traditional Pacific vibe that we have grown to like.
Others though will prefer the sleek modernism of the Rosewood’s or the Banyan Tree’s overwater bungalows.
It’s a tough call, but I guess you could have worse things to do today than having to choose between three of The Mayan Riviera's, and Mexico’s, classiest resorts!
Rosewood & Banyan Tree Mayakoba’s line up alongside the edge of a lagoon, while the Palafitos overwater bungalows are just off shore.
Palafitos El Dorado is all inclusive and the entire resort is adults only. Rosewood Mayakoba is a family friendly resort but their overwater bungalows are strictly adults only. Banyan Tree Mayakoba is family friendly, both the resort in general and the overwater bungalows.
