Why We Recommend These Overwater Bungalows:

The eco-friendly Koro Sun Resort sits on a lagoon surrounded by a lush 160-acre nature sanctuary on the island of Vanua Levu, just to the northeast of Fiji’s main island.

It’s a place with a strong back-to-nature appeal. If you’re feeling adventurous you can head out on some awe-inspiring jungle hikes or deep sea diving trips or, if you’re feeling lazy, just lay back and enjoy as much fine food, pampering, and relaxation as you like.

Overwater Bungalows & Other Accommodation:

The resort has a broad range of accommodations including overwater bungalows which actually float on the water, and larger, two-story, two-bedroom overwater villas in a semi-separate, private section of the resort.

The overwater bungalows are romantic and cozy with interior design that doesn’t stray much from the traditional Fijian. They are 377 square feet/35 square meters and have a small outside terrace with direct access to the water.

The overwater villas are far larger and more modern in style and have a large upstairs terrace and a small deck downstairs with access to the water. They also have a small round glass panel on the floor to watch the sea life below.

While the overwater bungalows are an adults-only zone the overwater villas are family-friendly, hence Koro Sun is placed in both our family-friendly and adults-only categories.

They also have some bungalows built along a natural jetty in the lagoon which offer direct access to the water. If all the overwater bungalows are booked out these can offer a pretty similar experience. These are also adults only.

The other options are too many to mention so you can check out all individually on the booking page. One particular favorite of ours though was the Mountain Top Villa, a grand, 5-bed colonial-style mansion that offers stunning views at every turn – over the jungle, the resort, and the wide open sea beyond.

Food & Drink:

Koro Sun’s main restaurant is The Palm Grove situated in the resort’s central building. It does a variety of international, Fijian, and Pacific Rim dishes, including some very good, exotic seafood, with much of the ingredients coming from the resort’s own organic gardens.

It is the venue for the daily breakfast which offers buffet – fresh fruits and breads, juices yogurts, cereals, etc. etc., as well as hot dishes made to order – mainly international but with some Pacific Rim twists – egg and coconut toast being a nice example.

Latitude 17 is a more stylish venue that sits by the lagoon. It has open views over the water and quality Asian Fusion. Some great seafood there too. It is adults only from 7 pm onwards.

The Sand Bar & Grill has relaxed open-air dining and equally nice views and is family-friendly. The equally relaxed Wai Bar & Grill by the main swimming infinity pool does international staples – pizza, burgers, etc. and is also family-friendly. It has a swim-up bar too with service offered directly from the pool.

All of the above venues also act as bars with a full range of quality drinks on offer and a nice place to hang out and socialize with other guests can be at the long bar in the central building called Levu Bar.

Resort Facilities & Things to Do:

The area surrounding the resort is a great place for long hikes and exploration, either guided or solo (we’d recommend the gorgeous hike to the Vuodomo Waterfalls for example).

You can try mountain biking too and there are a whole host of cultural excursions to be enjoyed – things like herb tours where you join a local guide in picking and preparing herbs used in Fijian traditional medicine, learn how to cook Fijian food or perform traditional dances, meet the locals at a Sunday church service and lots more.

They have a very highly rated Kid’s Club at Koro Sun. It’s busy and fun with a large playground but also has a nice emphasis on educational activities. Private babysitting and child minding services are also available.

There are also two beaches within walking distance, one being the resort’s private beach and the other a public beach.

Water sports are a big feature here too of course, and the coral reefs have an amazing array of sea life that can be observed by snorkeling or on scuba diving excursions.

They also have tennis courts, a bocce ball court, and a nine-hole mini golf course amongst other things. Their Rainforest Spa is an idyllic forest hideaway with a range of native Fijian and South Pacific treatments and products.

Location:

On Fiji’s more undisturbed second island, Vanua Levureach, the best way to get to Koro Sun Resort is to fly to Nadi International and then take one of Fiji Airlines’ many connecting flights to Savusavu Airport. From there Koro Sun’s shuttle service will collect you for the scenic 15 to 20-minute journey to the resort.

“A little heaven – there’s so many things I loved about this place. It had an amazing calm vibe. We were welcomed with a foot bath and rub which was so needed after a long journey and grounds in rainforest were absolutely beautiful. The spa is gorgeous! It also offered loads of free activities which were really such a great bonus. Everything was very easy and accessible. I loved that we could tie out canoe to our floating Bure.

“We spent 7 nights at Koro Sun and loved every minute of it. From the time we booked, we received emails to check our details so we would be picked up on time from the little airport 10 minutes away and had every email replied promptly. When we landed in SavuSavu we had a shuttle waiting and arrived to traditional signing and drums at the resort. The staff were all fantastic and had learnt our names so by the second day everywhere we went we were greeted by name. Our 14-year-old daughter my wife and I loved the activities including the 3 pools, bikes, forest walks, kayaks, paddleboards and snorkeling in the safe channel around the water bures. We had dinner in the main restaurant which was all you can eat smorgasbord and changes daily. We also had meals at the pool restaurant which were really large (we had to split our burgers) and the fantastic crabs and lobster at the waterfront restaurant too. Lastly, the spa treatments were out of this world. A fantastic trip all round, definitely my favourite of all the island holidays we have had…..”
