Banyan Tree Mayakoba in Playa del Carmen is a premier luxury resort and one of only four in Mexico with overwater bungalows
It’s very close to Palafitos El Dorado and Rosewood Mayakoba, both with their own overwaters; in fact, they share the same stretch of coast.
Banyan Tree’s overwater bungalows sure stand out; they opt for a modern, two-story, almost European chalet-inspired design rather than the traditional rustic Polynesian style with thatched roofs.
They are also quite enclosed, so very private, and many will appreciate that, though we personally prefer the more traditional, open-air feel of Palafitos, or the extra sleek modernity of Rosewood Mayakoba’s, up the road.
Out of all three though which offers the best overall resort experience?
We’d say it’s a toss up between the two Mayakobas, this one and Rosewood; two exceptional, exclusive resorts.

Our Verdict
Banyan Tree Mayakoba is a masterclass in modern, eco-conscious luxury; the overwater bungalows are private and spacious, and the resort is pure indulgence.
It’s a place for those of you who want top-tier golf, incredible food and wellness facilities alongside the unique privacy of a two-story overwater villa.
The overwater accommodation may divide opinion. Some may prefer the more European chalet style; others will prefer the open-air, expansive style of Palafitos up the road.
Both are similar price points, and we can say that though personally we prefer the Palafitos’ bungalows, Banyan Tree Mayakoba’s resort overall is superior.
