Overwater Bungalows in the Caribbean – A Great Alternative to the Maldives

From 5-star all-inclusive luxury in Jamaica and St. Lucia to secluded retreats in Panama and Belize, there are now overwater bungalows in several popular Caribbean destinations.

And while the Maldives and Bora Bora may still be the first places that spring to mind when you think of staying over the water, the Caribbean has one huge advantage: it’s considerably easier to get to from the United States and Canada.

Where can I find them?

Though a relatively recent addition to the Caribbean, there are now overwater bungalows in nine different countries, including Mexico and Central America:

Antigua
Aruba
Belize
Jamaica
Mexico
Panama
St. Lucia
St. Vincent
Turks & Caicos

Is the Caribbean a good alternative to the Maldives & Bora Bora for overwater bungalows?

It absolutely is! Particularly if you are traveling from the United States or Canada. The entire region is just so much easier to reach than either the Maldives or Bora Bora, and it’s in a similar time zone.

Are they all at luxury resorts?

Yes, most of the overwater bungalow resorts we have listed are 5-star luxury, to my mind some of the most luxurious in the Caribbean.

But, not all. Particularly in Bocas, Panama they are more rustic, hippie chic in style, and also much cheaper.

Are they for adults only?

Most – in the overwater bungalow section at least, if not the whole resort – will be for adults only.

Are the overwater bungalows all-inclusive?

A total of 5 overwater bungalows in the Caribbean are all-inclusive. You can filter for them below.

What are the prices like in 2026?

In 2026 an overwater bungalow in the Caribbean will cost you, on average, around $1,500 USD per night.

Prices go from as little as $150 USD per night in Panama, which has the cheapest, all the way up to $3,000 or so per night at Sandals’ resorts in Jamaica, St. Lucia, and now St. Vincent, though I should remind you that these are all all-inclusive.

Our favorites – which overwater bungalows did we like the most?

Our favorite overwater bungalows in the Caribbean overall are the Deluxe Bungalows with Infinity Pool at Sandals Caribbean Cay in Jamaica.

Some people may not be fans of all-inclusive resorts, or of Sandals, but their resorts are all 5 star for a reason, and the overwater bungalow experience, across all their resorts, is, we feel, second to none.

    Aruba Ocean Villas

The Aruba Ocean Villas Resort, home to Aruba’s only overwater bungalows, and still one of a handful of overwater bungalows in the Caribbean, occupies a slice of tropical paradise near Oranjestad and the international airport. It’s an adults-only resort with a gorgeous location, good facilities, top-class food, drink, and excellent service all around. It’s also small, intimate, and friendly, and has none of the anonymous, almost industrial atmosphere of many of the larger Caribbean resorts. They have only three overwater… > Read More
